Latin America is a very diverse region with many different countries and cultures, and it can be difficult to identify commonalities among them. However, this course will teach us about the process by which Latin America acquired its identity, and we'll learn about the history of the American empire in 10 units that cover topics from the 15th to the 19th centuries. We'll learn about the Spanish conquest of America, the discovery of Mexico and Peru, the formation and consolidation of Spanish viceroyalties, life and culture in colonial America, the evangelization and reform movements of the 16th and 17th centuries, and the rise of different ideas and movements leading to Latin America's independence in the end. This course will help us to understand the historical processes that make Latin America unique.
