This video discusses the different levels of reading comprehension, starting with the literal level. It explains that readers need to know some pre-existing knowledge, such as the language they are reading in, in order to understand text. The video then goes on to discuss an image of a human figure with a diverse array of cultural symbols inside of it, and how the figure is representative of a country's cultural diversity. The video then moves on to discuss an inferencial analysis of the figure, which identifies that it is a male figure and that it is standing upright with its front facing forward. The figure is also composed of various cultural symbols. The video then discusses a critical reading of the image, in which the viewer takes a position of either agreement or disagreement with some of the statements made within the image. Next, the video discusses an inferencial analysis of the figure that focuses on what all of the elements within the image mean together. This leads to the creation of hypotheses about why the figure is chosen, and why it is composed of certain cultural symbols. The video then goes on to discuss a critical reading of the image that takes a position on the infringement of cultural diversity represented by, for example, the freedom of religion.
